Hume
Some photos of the new Hume statue in Edinburgh (sent by my dad, who has recently become interested in Hume.):

"If we take in our hand any volume; of divinity or school metaphysics, for instance; let us ask, Does it contain any abstract reasoning concerning quantity or number? No. Does it contain any experimental reasoning concerning matter of fact and existence? No. Commit it then to the flames: for it can contain nothing but sophistry and illusion." (Hume's Enquiry)

My website photo of me, taken the last time I was in Edinburgh, is of me drunkenly impersonating this statue.

My thought when I first visited Edinburgh and saw this statue: "How odd. A city that seems to be celebrating its philosophers. Meanwhile it seems every city in America is searching for the best site for a huge bronze effigy of some millionaire baseball player. Different strokes, I guess."

My thought when I first visited Edinburgh and saw this statue: "Gee - Hume must have been quite a hardy bloke to be getting around Edinburgh barefoot in a toga ... ".
Even down here in Antipodean climes, we philosophers often complain about the icy fingers of winter's embrace whilst getting about campus barefoot in our togas. I guess Hume was made of sterner stuff.
